{April 12, 2008}   Battling Childhood Obesity through Smart Eating

Finally, a positive solution regarding America’s difficult and costly campaign to stem childhood obesity is emerging. For the thousands of children and their families who are currently battling with childhood obesity, this good news is long awaited.

Indeed, the risk factors for childhood obesity read like a checklist of ailments that only a generation ago would never have been linked to children and diet: heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and of course, social ridicule and alienation [i]. This latter consequence of childhood obesity — ridicule and alienation — has the dual effect of damaging a child both physically and emotionally far beyond childhood, and possibly for the rest of his or her natural life.

For years, medical experts have called for a multi-faceted strategy to address this epidemic. It has been clear that any long-term solution must be fought on four major fronts: physical activity, sedentary behavior, socioeconomic status, and eating habits [ii].

Yet there is room for another pillar; or, at the very least, the identification of another component that must be a part of any lasting solution. This fifth pillar, or undiscovered component, is smart nutritional supplements.

Many obese children have been told repeatedly by well-intentioned dieticians that eating smart is the key to overcoming this scarring condition. This is easier said than done; especially when emotional eating or an unobserved food addiction [1] may fuel adverse eating habits.

Yet being told to “eat smart” is oftentimes not enough. Children must be provided with foods that are nutritionally sound, and foods that they actually enjoy eating. It is this latter criterion that most well-intentioned experts and caregivers overlook. This is explained below.

Most obese children are neither unable to learn, nor willfully disobedient. Some of these children even have remarkable support from their well-adjusted families who dutifully remove the usual suspects of chips, soft drinks, chocolate bars, and other damaging foods from the home. Yet many of these same children continue to gain weight and march ever closer to the litany of health defects noted above.

These children are not sadistic, and they are not attempting to kill themselves through eating; though some do because of the stigma associated with their condition. Indeed, many obese children are cognitively aware of the danger to which they are subjecting their bodies. Yet they continue to snack away in secret, or binge on foods when they get the chance, thereby undoing whatever minor gains might have been achieved in the previous few days or weeks.

The problem is one of food selection. Generally speaking, children of all weights and shapes will not eat something that they do not like. For obese children who have typically had unfettered access to highly stimulating foods such as gravies and sugar-loaded soft drinks, the willpower to eat unpalatable foods is undeveloped. Indeed, the dietician may snack away on carrots and celery while talking to an obese child about the importance of eating smart. For the obese child, carrots and celery are foreign foods for which there is no known preference.

This fifth pillar, or new component, is therefore one that provides obese children with nutritional supplements that they will eat. As stunningly obvious - even axiomatic - as this seems, it has been lost on many experts until recently.

Thankfully, as noted above, there is a solution emerging. It is one that meets this demand for tasty, healthy foods. Forward-thinking companies that understand their consumers are creating low-calorie, highly nutritious foods fortified with life-sustaining vitamins and protein. More importantly: they are tasty, and are often packaged in colorful containers that are “teen-friendly”. Companies including MetRx, Experimental and Applied Sciences, Protica Research, and others develop products that fit well within these requirements. Granted, a healthy diet does not start or end with nutritional supplements. A healthy diet employs nutritional supplements to complement and fortify real foods.

Indeed, children and families affected by the obesity epidemic in America are cautiously optimistic at this point; after all, they have been promised solutions in the past. However, thanks to the next generation of nutritional supplements, there is an expectation that this optimism will steadily grow with every success story, and every child that recovers from the potentially devastating impact of obesity.

A new organisation asked over one hundred UK ladies in March what their best sexual toy was along with other personal questions. A dildo can help add extra stimulation along with penetration. Chicks were so excited by the idea of a large vibrator that many of them would use it straight after coming home from work. The best types of vibrator were the Jessica rabbit vibrators as they help to stimulate the clit as well as inserting into the love tunnel. The other find the adult toy company found out was that the sex toy users just loved using their sexual toy on a daily basis by themselves. If the UK girls were in a good relationship they would use it with their loving partners. The other most popular sexual toy was the exciting dong. Dildo dongs are similar to vibrators except they do not have batteries or vibrate. Dildo dongs come in all shapes and sizes from six inches to 12 inches. {April 12, 2008}   Content Really is King

It is every affiliate’s wish to have unique site content absent
of any re-write or editing restrictions, effectively content with an
“open license.” Many sources do exist for content that can’t be
changed, but there are very few sources which allow an affiliate to
manipulate the article and make it unique and specific to their
site(s). However, this trend could be changing in the near future.

There is a war between content sites and sites which purely provide
product lists. Google, for the moment, has clearly indicated that sites
providing unique content will prove victorious in the battle. This
means affiliates who want to compete on Google need to have unique
content for their sites or risk vanishing into that ever increasing
special black hole Google seems to reserve for affiliates.

So
where does an affiliate get unique content from? Some affiliates can
write their own, but it’s generally a minority that has the time or
desire to do so. A few pay for content to be produced by freelance
writers on networks such as Elance (www.elance.com) or by professional copy writing services such as InfoSearch Media (www.infosearchmedia.com).

Others
are lucky enough to get content from their merchants. That is until the
merchants realize that distributing their own content is only a short
term gain for long term oblivion. The content’s value is diluted and
degraded due to being repeated and copied to a point where the merchant
loses control of it. Affiliates absent of the gratuitous merchant turn
to sites such as Ezine Articles (www.ezinearticles.com) and ARA Content (www.aracontent.com)
where the content is free, but can’t be edited or changed. In most
cases, content provided from these sources must also retain links
and/or credits to the author as well as the source site.

The
obvious solution is to have merchants develop content specific to their
affiliates, no credits required, no back links requested (well other
than affiliate tracked and tagged ones that is), the right to edit,
cut, slice, dice and the expressed permission to generally edit the
content to make it unique.

The niche of “open license” content has but a few players in the arena. For example, Wikiepedia (www.wikipedia.org)
while not a merchant, does allow articles to be re-written; however,
this permission does come with a few strings attached as they apply a
fair number of requirements in order to use the content. Various Affiliate Management firms now provide in “open license” house content development for their affiliates. These services should place them as leading contenders in
the affiliate content arena. At the end of the day though, each individual
affiliate still needs to sit down and work out how to make the content
unique to them if they want to win their battle with Google.

As a new parent, you worry about every little ailment, scratch and bump that your newborn experiences. Seeing your baby’s skin break out in red and white pimples can be a little bit of a scare. After all, your little one shouldn’t have to deal with acne until he or she becomes a teenager, right? Not quite. What your child is experiencing is baby acne, a fairly common condition that affects young babies.

What Causes Baby Acne?
Acne is often caused by a change of hormones, bad nutrition and excessively oily skin. So how did your sweet little baby acquire any one of these causes? Obviously your child hasn’t picked up any bad eating habits yet, and newborns don’t usually suffer from oily skin. Hormones are the culprits.

Right before birth, the mother passes her hormones along to the baby through the placenta. This causes your baby’s skin to break out in acne when he or she is just a few weeks old. Baby acne mostly appears when the child is 4 to 6 weeks old.

How To Treat Baby Acne?
Baby acne is thankfully just a temporary skin condition. To take care of baby’s skin and help clear up the acne, wash the affected area several times a day with warm water and mild baby soap. If the acne appears in baby’s face, gently wipe it after each meal or spit-up. You should never use anything other than mild baby soap on your baby’s delicate skin unless your pediatrician instructs you otherwise. Baby’s skin is much to sensitive for any harsher cleaning solutions or acne remedies.

Once the hormones that were passed on from the mother work their way out of baby’s system, the baby acne will clear up on its own. Until then, keep the area clean to avoid additional bacteria to grow and to keep your baby comfortable.

The little zits do not hurt or bother your baby, after all he or she is too young to feel self-conscious about them and neither should you. Your baby will be just as cute with a few little bumps.

{April 11, 2008}   Leadership Is Action… Not Position

People respond to good leadership! Period! It is in all aspects of our lives, not just business. A mother is a leader in her home; a son may be leader of a team sport or a daughter the leader of the debate team. A group relies on the person in charge to actually lead them to success. A true leader is highly ethical, honest and respected.

In our society we have leaders and followers. Are we born to one or the other? No! Can you hone your leadership skills? Absolutely!

The leaders that I admire seem to have all of these in place:

a) They think BIG! They don’t put a ceiling in place. Instead, no limit is set as to how big or how much better something can be.

b) The goals are firmly set in place and the eye does not come off of it.

c) They make known to all involved the final product that they are all going for, example, if you sell widgets, it takes x number of widgets to be affluent, or you want to win that football game and ultimately the title. Know what you’re going for.

d) They can get compliance to orders.

e) When goals are met they set new goals or raise the bar.

People will follow your lead willingly if you are honest, ethical, if you are consistent and treat them with respect. Rewarding someone when a job is well done is always appreciated. A good leader will also off load someone who consistently hinders the group who is just not a team player.

You can improve your own self- respect and become an inspiration to others. How great is that!

{April 11, 2008}   The Cracked Pot

Letters on Life#3

Some experiences you never forget. In some of them there is great learning. Many years ago I had such an experience that remains with me to this day. It shows up in so many areas of my life. To begin with I like to perform. I was a trial lawyer for 30 years and have been a musician since I was seven. Most people would say I am comfortable in front of people. But even now, whenever I’m in front of people, there is an inner conversation going on that I do not want to have. It is always a variation of “can I do it” or “will it be good enough.” This experience occurred when I participated in a weekend workshop sponsored by the Actors Institute which was designed to increase one’s ability to give better presentations. The participants included actors, musicians, comedians, lawyers and politicians. After a long weekend of exercises designed to “stretch” us we were required to give our presentation. We then critiqued our own and each others performance. Without exception, our critique of our own presentation was much harsher than the groups. The instructor commented that if we had to hire ourselves we would never get a job!

We are so hard on ourselves. The truth is, in the process of trying to be perfect, we often focus on our imperfections and sometimes that is all we see. Because of this fear of being imperfect, we procrastinate and agonize over seemingly easy tasks. My wife Annie reminded me of a story that illustrates this point.

The master lived quite a distance from the stream. Every day his servant, the water bearer, would walk from his master’s house to the stream with two large pots, each hung on opposite ends of a pole which he carried across his neck. One pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the walk, while the other pot had a crack in it and arrived only half full. This went on for a full two years and the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, but the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its imperfections and of the fact that it was only able to accomplish half of what it had been made to do. Finally the cracked pot summoned up enough courage to have its own conversation with the water bearer.

It went something like this. ” I am ashamed and I want to apologize to you for I have let you down. Because of my flaws you have had to do twice as much work.” But the water bearer would have nothing of this conversation. “Did you notice the beautiful wild flowers along the path and did you notice that these beautiful flowers were only on your side of the path?” That’s because I have always known of your flaws and I took advantage of them and planted flower seeds on your side of the path and every day you watered them. And these beautiful flowers that you have watered everyday grace the master’s table. Without you being just the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house.”

Each of us has our own unique flaws and in our own way we are all cracked pots. We all know we have imperfections and to varying degrees we have shame around them. But what we need to remember is that with all our imperfections we create a lot of beauty and a lot of good in the world. Perhaps what real courage is all about is not letting our fears and imperfections stop us. We keep on going. Imagine experiencing your imperfections in a different way– as a gift or unique opportunity. Identify one imperfection that keeps coming up for you and discover what gift is hidden in that imperfection. Where is the opportunity?

Let me know what you discover. I love receiving your many responses and feedback and if you have other stories to share let me know about them. Feel free to pass on this letter to the friends in your circle and let them know about the advantages of being on the journey.

{April 11, 2008}   Satellite TV Set Up Fun

Satellite TV was the rainbow after the storm in my life. I had just left my drudge of a job, as an overworked sales clerk. I was bored at home, feeling really low. I did a lot of looking around in stores and window shopping just to get out of the house. I saw a promotion in the window of one of the video stores in town. It was for a satellite TV system on sale. Since I didn’t have cable TV At the time, this ad really attracted me.

I went in and had a look at the quality and content of the satellite programming being shown on one of the TV sets showing it. The picture was so impressive. The picture quality was so crystal clear, and sharp. The brochure the clerk provided me indicated that there were over 50 channels to watch. Of course I jumped at the chance to brighten up my life.

That evening the store owner installed the dish. He laid the cable and hooked everything up. The system was turned on and then nothing. The receiver had to wait to be activated. This took over 24 hours to occur. When it started working it was terrific. It featured all the movie channels one could wish for. HBO, Cinemax, the Movie Channel, the independent Film Channel, and more. There were more sports channels than one could watch. MTV quickly became one of my favourites. Shows like Road Rules, and The Real World, made my day. It was like being in touch with a world I had never known.

Satellite TV signal reception has vulnerabilities. During heavy rain or snow storms, the amount of data carried in the signal is reduced, sometimes so much so that the computer which constructs the picture on the screen, can’t do its job. When this happens little blocks pop up on the screen. This is called picture break up. If the rain or snow storm becomes more heavy, the data will became so reduced that the video freezes its movement. The computer crashes. Unplugging the receiver, removing and reinserting the smart card usually fixes the computer crash. When the storm has passed and the dish can receive, the satellite TV data at a normal signal strength, everything will work, normally once the receiver is plugged in and turned on.

When I moved residences, I had to reinstall the Satellite TV dish. This involves attaching a mast to the wall of your house, with a clear view of the southern sky. That means no trees, houses, or anything, in the way of the line of sight the dish has to the satellite location in the sky. The mast must be levelled vertically. The satellite dish is placed on the mast and set to the approximately height and direction of the satellite location in the sky. The receiver is then connected to the wire lead from the dish, and the TV. When the receiver is turned on and put in tuning mode, a graph will display the satellite signal strength. The satellite dish is moved ever so gently by a hairs width, up and down, side to side, until you reach the highest satellite signal strength. This gives you the best chance of viewing longer during a rain or snow storm.

On the whole satellite TV is the best TV viewing you can experience. You usually get more for your dollar, and it’s worth every penny spent.

Many investors think that investing in mutual funds is free. What nonsense! Funds collect more than $50 billion a year in fees from investors. That is truly a ton of money. The first way you get hosed in a mutual fund is due to high fees charged. These fees can dramatically reduce your returns over time!

The way that these fees are deducted automatically from a fund’s returns makes them invisible because you never see an invoice or have to write a check. If you invest $10,000.00 in a domestic stock mutual fund with an expense ratio of 2% and a sales load of 3%, and let’s imagine that you get annual returns of 7.5% for twenty years, your money would almost triple to $27,508.00.

The bad news is that you would have lost $14,970 in fees and foregone earnings over the twenty years. Yikes…that really hurts! Why not just bypass the system and buy your own stocks as I teach finance students and home study investors?
These funds are also sold and managed on pure hype, short term trading, and with key information withheld from the public.

All of these factors I teach finance students and investors to avoid! The industry confuses investors by focusing on past performance, which should not be a factor to consider. Many mutual funds are able to cheat the public with excessive fees because investors don’t understand how these big costs destroy their profit. Mutual funds have no interest in educating investors because it is easier to hoodwink the ignorant!

Don’t put your trust in mutual funds unless they are fully indexed. Indexing means that the mutual fund simply uses a computer to buy and sell stocks in the mutual fund portfolio so as to mimic the composition of a major stock market index like the S&P 500. This means that there is no fund manager sucking out needless fees. A good example is the first fully indexed mutual fund called the Vanguard 500 (VFINX) which is also now the largest of its kind.

{April 10, 2008}   A Quick Guide to Steaming Vegetables

Vegetables can be steamed, boiled, broiled and barbequed but steaming is one of the easiest methods to bring out vegetables full flavor and bright intense color. When vegetables are steamed all the nutrients remain in the vegetables making this a healthier alternative to other cooking methods.

Steamed vegetables can be drizzled with a light sauce of butter or olive oil which complements the tender nature of the steamed vegetables. They can also be sprinkled with lemon juice or balsamic vinegar for a tangy twist on steamed vegetables. To really show off steamed vegetables first drizzle with olive oil then top with fresh grated parmesan cheese.

To steam vegetables place about one inch of water in the bottom of a sauce pan and load in the steamer. Place a single layer of vegetables in the steamer and sprinkle with salt at the beginning of cooking. Steam the vegetables until they are slightly tender but not mushy or crisp.

Testing for doneness is easy. Simply take a bite of one of the vegetables, if it is still crisp give the vegetables a few more minutes.

When selecting vegetables for steaming look for young tender vegetables such as baby artichokes, asparagus, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, green beans, potatoes and snap peas. Then follow the simple steps above and you will have tasty fresh steamed vegetables.
