{January 30, 2009}   Stargate SG-1 (Season 7) DVD Review

A sequel to the 1994 movie Stargate, Stargate SG-1 is one of the premiere science-fiction series on television. First airing in July 1997, the show has been nominated for 7 Emmys and 23 Saturn Awards. The brainchild of creator Dean Devlin, producer of such Hollywood blockbusters as Independence Day (1996) and The Patriot (2000), Stargate SG-1 chronicles the further adventures of the Stargate Command (SGC) as Earth and its citizens advance forward into a new era of space exploration in the aftermath of Dr. Daniel Jackson’s discovery of the galaxy’s numerous stargates…

Stargate SG-1 follows the exploits of the SG-1 Unit (i.e. the “explorer” unit) of Stargate Command. When a new code is broken that reveals the location of stargates throughout the galaxy, Earth and its inhabitants are given the ability to travel through time to any point they wish instantaneously. Earth’s military sends out stargate (SG) teams to scour the universe for new technologies, new planets, and methods of defense against the oppressive Goa’uld. Brigadier General Jonathan “Jack” O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) is the commanding officer of SG-1. He’s accompanied by Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), the brilliant professor whose investigations originally helped uncover the existence of the stargates, and fellow teammates Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and Teal’c (Christopher Judge). Together, they face numerous obstacles as they attempt to uncover the many mysteries of the universe…

The Stargate SG-1 (Season 7) DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere “Fallen” in which Jonas uncovers a location for The City of the Lost. When they finally get to the planet, they find Daniel Jackson who suffers from amnesia. Meanwhile, SG-1 finds out that Anubis is triumphing with the aide of the Eye that Jack turned over to him… Other notable episodes from Season 7 include “Evolution” in which Daniel is taken hostage when he travels to South America in order to uncover an alien device, and “Heroes” in which Stargate Command is devastated when a member is killed during a Goa’uld ambush…

{January 30, 2009}   Photography A - Z the Easy Way: T - Time Exposure

Most times, when you take a photo, the camera will make calculations to determine the correct shutter speed settings. These speeds will typically be in the range 1/15 to 1/000 of a second. At other times, especially when the light is low, the shutter speed will be longer than this. Shutter speeds greater than a second would typically be termed “timed” exposures.

In some cases, exposure times can reach several seconds or minutes and at these low speeds mounting the camera on a tripod is essential to prevent camera shake and blur. The lower the light, the lower the ISO and the smaller the aperture then the longer the shutter speed will need to be.

Modern digital cameras are capable of calculating the exposure time in low light and many have a built-in speed setting of up to 30 seconds. In other cases you should use your “B” or “bulb” setting to achieve the desired timed shutter firing.

In very low light, such as at nighttime, you should calculate your expose then readjust according to the results. By taking several pictures with a long exposure you can determine which is the best exposure setting bearing in mind that the camera meter (and even a hand held on) can be fooled by the low light and often high contrast scenes.

The pound is fetching only slightly more than a Euro at exchanges, one would think that there would be a lot of fantastic bargains to be booked in alpine resorts this season as potential snowboarders stick in the UK to avoid the crunch. Early facts recently published show that skiing towns are 84 % full during the holiday period. 14 percent up on the self same period a year ago.

You’ll have better luck in early 2009 that at the moment has a 37 39 % reservation rate. Signs of a recession is across the important Feb ski vacation month which has 61 % reservations, 5 % down on last season. Booking centers in the skiing resorts of La Mongie, Les Contamines-Montjoie, Megeve and Verchaix have noted strong bookings in November advanced by the heavy early ski season snow fall. Montroc has stronger bookings in comparison to last winter, and La Mongie enjoyed a grand New Year.

There is heavy interest in bigger self catering chalets, 8 to 9 places, as folk group-up to save. Early evidence shows that DIY skiing breaks are holding up well, evidence perhaps that serious skiers are not going to sacrifice their skiing holiday. However bookings from the big tour operators are down on last year.

{January 25, 2009}   Conversion of Spreadsheet Graph data to SVG

It should be possible to convert spreadsheet graph data to SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). This could also be achieved in any software system that uses graphs. It is difficult to convert one structure to a different representation such as a tree based information structure of a component into a diagrammatic representation of a component in SVG. This is not impossible though as CAD tools can do this. But output of a graph to SVG is straight forward, as the actual structure and semantics are the same, its only the syntax that needs conversion, so this can be achieved using virtually any programming language. In spreadsheets the data is converted to a graph automatically anyway.

However it is not practical to expect users to do this, its much more sensible to provide this functionality for them, so they can concentrate on representing the graph to explain the information they want displayed. There might be graph types that are difficult to translate, but a good approach would be to first automate the translation to bar charts, line graphs, and pie charts.

If anyone has worked on this can they let me know, and I’ll add an explanation of what they are doing to this article.

It would also be interesting to know whether anyone is aware of whether Microsoft are going to provide an HTML output that conforms to W3C recommendations for XHTML so the converted pages can be validated. This is another straight forward problem, and would save everyone so much time. Another thing that would save a great deal of peoples’ time is a tool to aid in conversion of non-compliant web pages to compliant pages.

I am a Researcher in the final year of my. I specialise in applying Semantic Web techniques. My current research is on a technique of ‘User Driven Modelling/Programming’. My intention is to enable non-programmers to create software from a user interface that allows them to model a particular problem or scenario. This involves a user entering information visually in the from of a tree diagram. I am attempting to develop ways of automatically translating this information into program code in a variety of computer languages. This is very important and useful for many employees that have insufficient time to learn programming languages. I am using the Protege ontology editor developed from a project of Stanford University and beginning to use the Jena tool of Hewlett-Packard. I am looking to research visualisation, and visualisation techniques to create a human computer interface that allows non experts to create software.

Shopping for car insurance can be a big undertaking. It can be daunting at times but is very important. There are now many ways to get yourself insured and the coverage you need.

Smart customers know it pays to do a little research before buying car insurance. Just based on the price of the insurance rates today, why not take the time to check the rates with several companies. Researching companies holds true for renewals as well. You can get a feel for the insurance market and find out if you have the best rates. If your current policy is already cheaper you know you are doing all right.

The first and best way to find out what is out there is to go through your local phone book. Most, if not all, companies will give you quotes right over the phone. This way you can run down the list and get multiple rates right away. One thing to remember is to compare apples to apples. This means make sure you are getting the price for the same type of coverage.

Full coverage for one company is not the same as for another. Limits are important to look at as well. Bodily injury with company A may be a little cheaper then B but their coverage may be only 10,000/20,000 while B’s is 100,000/300,000. You want to make sure you are aware of the coverage you are have and that you want the type of insurance you are getting a rate for. You can always adjust your policy up or down to meet your needs. Before adjusting it down consider that you may save a few dollars now by lowering coverage but during a claim be unhappy that the limits paid are lower then your damages. Always, always buy as much insurance as you can afford.

Another way to find companies in your area is to go online. The Internet is an excellent tool to help you shop around. You can look up many carriers and may even be able to run quotes yourself. There is no waiting on hold and you can usually do it 24 hours a day. You do not have to wait for an agent to help you or call you back if he or she is busy. You can print out lists and easily compare prices.

Online you can also check the credentials of the company. You can look to see how long they have been in business and find locations. You can find companies that are not in your local area but can serve you just as well. Some companies allow you to start your policy right on the computer for added convenience. You can get your quote, enter your information and activate your policy immediately. Proof of insurance usually can be printed right from your home computer’s printer.

Driving around town may also afford you the chance to find a company that is close to you. An agency close to your home or job is convenient. Agencies close by also let you make payments right in the office and lets you get to know your agent. This way however does give you a limited amount of choices and prices may not be as good as you may get by calling around.

Is one way better then the other? Well that is up to you. Some people just want to get the process over and done with. Some people want the best rate available. Some want the best and most coverage available. The answer is whatever is most comfortable for you is what you should go with.

{January 22, 2009}   Photography - Forensic Photography

You’re probably not going to find a lot of information on forensic photography. The truth is, this is an area of photography that your typical photographer does not get into. You’re dealing with taking photos of people who have been brutally murdered and an assortment of other crimes. Forensic photography is not for the weak stomach. But just what is involved in becoming a forensic photographer? The course outline may not rival going to medical school, but it’s quite a handful.

As with all other types of photography, a forensic photographer first has to learn the basics of the equipment that is used such as cameras, lenses, filters, flash, tripods, types of film and a number of other items that are considered basic equipment for forensic photography. The list is as long as King Kong’s right arm.

The next thing that needs to be learned and understood is that forensic photography is technical photography. Photos must be correctly exposed, must have a maximum depth of field so that the photos are sharp and in focus and must be free from distortion. In other words, the photo must be as close to what the human eye sees as possible and still uncover things that can’t be easily seen by the human eye. Not an easy task.

The photographer must learn about flash and night photography. Many crimes happen at night and the photos have to be taken at the time of the finding. This includes learning everything about dedicated, automatic and electronic flash, including what problems you can expect to run into with each. Troubleshooting is critical in forensic photography.

Then there is a whole course on the purpose of forensic photography so the photographer knows why he is taking the photos he is taking. This includes recording the original crime scene, recording all evidence, providing a permanent visual record and understanding the admissibility of photographic evidence.

Then there is a course on what they call general crime scene photography. This course covers the basics of crimes regardless of the kind. These are procedures that need to be followed regardless of what has happened whether it be a robbery or a murder.

After this course there is a more in depth course, or series of courses, on specific crimes such as homicides, suicides, burglaries, assaults, traffic accidents and injuries. Each one of these incidents requires certain procedures that are specific only to that particular crime.

For example, with homicides color film must be used. Photographs must be taken of the exterior and interior of the building. The photographer must also take photos of the body itself from as many as five different angles, the room the body was found in, the adjoining rooms, close up of body wounds, any weapons found, any trace of evidence such as blood, any signs of a struggle, any signs of prior activity to the homicide, such as drink glasses on a table (maybe they knew each other) and all views that witnesses had if there were any.

And then if that isn’t enough, there is a whole course on how to photograph evidence from fingerprints to footprints and anything else that may be found at a crime scene. A forensic photographer must have eyes like a hawk to know what to look for.

If you’re thinking that this is something you’d like to do, now at least you know what’s in store for you.

Looks like Microsoft Great Plains becomes more and more popular, partly because of Microsoft muscles behind it. Now it is targeted to the whole spectrum of horizontal and vertical market clientele. Small companies use Small Business Manager (which is based on the same technology - Great Plains Dexterity dictionary and runtime), Great Plains Standard on MSDE is for small to midsize clients, and then Great Plains serves the rest of the market up to big corporations. There are several reporting tools available and you definitely need to know which one to use for different types of reports.

If you are developer who is asked: how do we create report for Microsoft Great Plains - read this and you will have the clues on where to look further.

  1. Great Plains Report Writer (ReportWriter) - this is built-in reporting tool. All the original report in Great Plains are written in ReportWriter. ReportWriter itself is Dexterity module. You should use this tool if you would like to modify existing Great Plains reports, such as Blank Invoice Form - here you can place your company logo, change the positioning, fonts, colors, etc. ReportWriter will allow you also do new reports - simple option if you want to export all the records from one Great Plains table - use it. New report, however doesn’t have interface where you would enter parameters - so it is not useful for real custom reports. Another limitation of ReportWriter - you can not do cross-modules report - when you need sales and purchasing info on the same report for example.
  2. FRx. This is excellent tool when deal with financial reporting - it works on the General Ledger level (Balance sheet, P&L, Cash Flow Statement, etc.). It also allows you to do multiple companies consolidation - when you do consolidated Balance Sheet (with inter-companies transactions elimination).
  3. Smart List - Export to Excel - this is nice feature in Great Plains - you could create a list with simple criteria and then export it to Excel.
  4. Crystal Reports. It gives you unlimited functionality. Obviously flexibility requires you to know Great Plains table structure: Launch Great Plains and go to Tools->Resource Description->Tables. Find the table in the proper series. If you are looking for the customers - it should be RM00101 - customer master file. If you need historical Sales Order Processing documents - they are in SOP30200 - Sales History Header file, etc. Create ODBC connection to GP Company database. Use the same technique as when you create standard ODBC connection for GP workstation - but change default database to targeted company database. Create SQL Query to probe the data - we always recommend tuning your query and see that you are getting adequate results - in any case - Crystal Report is just a nice tool to show the results of your query.
  5. Direct Web Publishing off Great Plains databases - yes - it is easy now with Visual Studio.Net and you can hire good programmers. This is good - Microsoft Business Solutions products: Great Plains, Solomon, Navision and Axapta will be integrated into so called Microsoft Business Portal - which will have web interface - you can get the idea if you look at Microsoft CRM web client - so direct web publishing is good taste.
  6. SQL Queries. If you have SQL background - this is great field for you. You know - with properly formatted SQL query you can realize simple EDI export/import for the integration with legacy systems.

{January 18, 2009}   Simple Solution for Php Includes - IFrames

I have recently created my first Php program. I wanted to share with others some of the problems that I encountered, and how I finally overcame these obstacles.

My Reason for needing a Php Include

To start, my most recent website features a free classified advertising solution, a modified version of PhpBB stripped to function as an Article Bulletin Board (No replying), and a link directory. The business model of my Website offers free Classified Advertising, but charges a small fee for enhanced advertisements (Featured, Bolded, and Better Placement). The Classifieds were purchased from a developer, so I had little experience with the application. The link directory was a free resource of an old program that I modernized a bit. I choose the old link directory because the links are clean. They are not replaced with coding to count outbound traffic. I figured this would increase the value of links, to sites who exchanged links with me.

To increase revenue on the new site, I realized that I needed to increase the value of, “Featured Advertisements”. To do this I wanted to randomly rotate featured advertisements, from the classifieds, across my Bulletin Board and Link Directory. Bare in mind, all three are run from a unique table, and I wanted to leave it that way. In addition, I had little experience with the development for all three applications.

I started reading tutorials and utilizing Forums to create a Php program for external pages on the site. The program would pull a random featured ad from the classified table. This program only took me about 32 hours to create, while performing research. I didn’t intend to get into the schematics of the program with this post, so forgive me if you are looking for a Random generator. But I would be more than happy to share my code upon request.

The code I created was simple, it worked just the way I wanted, but I ran into one cumbersome obstacle; how do I implement this easily across two unique table driven applications? The answer was to use a Php Include

I started reading tutorials on, “Php includes and functions and classes”. I realized quickly that this was a bit more confusing than creating the actual coding. In addition, I ran into parsing errors if I included the new coding in only one application.

My solution to using the, “Include (),” Php function

I found that very few people were willing to provide any feedback for such a problem, even in the most resourceful forums for Php Coding and information resources. I fumbled with the coding for over 72 hours. I thought this was a bit ridiculous, as the code itself took less time to create.

I finally came across a helpful solution that may prove beneficial, if you are in the same situation with Php Includes. The code was uploaded onto my server as a file (something.php). I removed the standard, “Php Include (),” function from all links and the PhpBB coding. I then called the Php file (page) using an Iframe tag, on pages I wanted it to appear. This proved to be a successful replacement for the Php Include.

Search Engine Results Using Iframe for Php Include

I waited until Google came around to see how the Iframe affected my sites search rankings. Finally, the other day this happened. The conclusion, my search rankings still increased due to recent link exchanges. The code is working to my needs, and it is easily included on any page that I want, even externals outside my site can call on the code, which opens more doors for advancement.

Here is the simple Iframe code I used to replace the Php Include:

iframe align=top valign=right width=600 height=105 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 hspace=0 vspace=0 frameborder=0 scrolling=no src=”http://your.com/file-to-include.php” width=600 height=105> /iframe

Using the Iframe tag for Php Include Conclusion

I have encountered no problems with including my PHP code on pages across external servers, using the iframe as a Php Include. As you can see, it is totally customizable. You can specify the width, height, alignment, border, scrolling, margins and more. The only obstacle that I have encountered, is the style sheet that the site, or page, with the, “Php Include,” is not utilized. The page that the code is on seems to need its own unique style sheet.

I hope this proves beneficial to anyone having trouble with running a “Php Include” across various unique online applications.

{January 16, 2009}   Reliable Life Insurance Company - Which Companies are the Best?

The life insurance industry is a carefully regulated industry. Every state has its own insurance department to monitor the activity of insurers. You very rarely hear of life insurance companies that dissolve because of financial problems. Insurance companies have to prove financial strength to operate in most states. Insurance commissioners have the authority to approve or deny rate changes. There are consumer guides that are available to help you compare companies. The AM Best Company is the most reliable resource in the industry. You can visit AM Best online and you will find all the information that you need about financial strength and product information.

Life insurance companies distribute their products many different ways. The agent distribution system has been around a long time. The life insurance professional is a valuable resource for people that want an on going relationship with an agent. A lot of folks want the personal service that only an agent can provide. Life insurance can also be purchased through the mail. There are a number of companies that use direct mail as their distribution system.

Insurance companies are also offering life insurance online. This is convenient for most folks that love to use their computer to make purchases. The online purchase can also lead you to an agent. That can give you the best of both worlds. You can begin the process by getting a quote online and finish the purchase with an agent from a company of your choice. The company best for you would be the combination of the financial strength and whether or not you prefer to be serviced by an agent.

There is one more factor when selecting an insurance company. Do you want to purchase insurance from a stock company or a mutual company? Stock companies are owned by the stock holders while the mutual companies are technically owned by the policy holders. Mutual companies pay dividends. Stock companies do not. Compare the rates of a stock company with a mutual company first and then compare the rates of stock companies with stock companies and mutual companies with mutual companies.

{January 16, 2009}   Home Insurance. Flood Alert

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors warns that if you can’t get insurance for your house, you’re in big trouble. Mortgage lenders won’t lend on houses that are uninsurable and as a result its value could fall by up to 80%.

It’s a high flood risk that’s most likely to make your house uninsurable. According to a recent survey, 6.5 million homes are already at risk from flooding of which 1.5 million are in high risk areas. The government has completed flood defences in many such areas and protection for a further 80,000 homes is due this year. But concerns have also been expressed about a further 120,000 new homes planned for the Thames Gateway which are potentially in a high “at risk” zone. Yet many areas remain vulnerable. And if global warming continues, by 2030, the 1.5 million at risk could mushroom 3.5 million. Back in 2003 the Association of British Insurers (ABI) agreed the principles which committed UK insurers to offering home and contents insurance for properties in areas which are assessed to be at a flooding risk once in seventy five years or more. The rider was that the flood defences had to be already in place or would be completed by the end of 2007.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has the responsibility of developing and maintaining these flood defences but within the insurance industry there’s widespread concern that insufficient progress is being made. As a result the insurers have has warned the government that there could be widespread withdrawal of insurance cover if progress is stepped up.

In the mean time, those in areas threatened by flood water could find their insurance premiums soaring. Whilst the insurance industry agreed to provide insurance cover, their commitment was simply to maintain premiums at “reasonable” levels. But there was no definition of what “reasonable” means. As a result premium increases of 60% have been common with up 400% increases in bad areas. In a tiny number of cases, cover has been withdrawn altogether, mostly in country areas where DEFRA considers the cost of defending a cluster of a few homes to be uneconomic.

Environmentalists warn that unless DEFRA gets it’s skates on, the UK ’s current bill for flood damage could rise from £950 million a year, to £3.2 billion. After all, the average insurance claim for household flood damage is £30,000 - that’s even higher than fire damage. And localised events like the 2004 flood at Boscastle, Cornwall , can cost the insurers over £15 million.

If you are in any doubt whether your home or proposed home, is in a flood risk area, you should visit www.environment-agency.gov.uk. This is DEFRA’s web site where you can check whether they think your home is at risk of flooding. Their maps were originally designed for planning purposes and provide information on a post-code basis.

Whilst many insurers use the DEFRA information, others like More Than, have their own flood maps. These assess homes individually rather than post code areas. This means that if your existing insurer increases your premium for flood risk and uses the DEFRA information, you may still be able to get a cheaper rate from an insurer using it’s own flood data if its data identifies that your property is beyond the “at risk” zone.

The ABI has recently added to the pressure on DEFRA to accelerate the building and upgrading of flood defences. It has warned that unless the government increases its spending on flood defences, the insurance industry may not continue their commitment to the 2003 principles.

That would be bad news for many homeowners.
