There’s more involved in turning a profit than income alone - it’s important to be making money cost effectively. One of the easier ways of doing this is through performance management software. Once you know what the specific strengths of your members of staff are, it’s possible to adjust your procedures to optimize their effectiveness and consequently make the most of the business as a whole. Learning about and making this data ready for use is often where things become challenging.
Simply tracking employee appraisal and identifying development in that performance rapidly becomes a significant hassle. First, you use employee appraisal techniques to assess and track all work done by each member of staff. If this was done with established methods, you’ll need to assess all of that data manually in order to set goalposts, and track future progress. Employing performance management software you’ll find that this assessment is taken care of and you need only examine the various metrics to find what the right set of goals for this staff member would be. It also makes charting the staff member’s development much less effort. Thus you ease a significant time commitment and probably also receive more useful information into the bargain. If you choose to you can instead carry out your own analysis, merely utilizing the software to produce and keep up a record to work from.
And making your employees more efficient is simply one thing you can do using performance appraisal software. Both clients and suppliers can be analyzed using the appropriate software, providing you with more performance management tools. You’ll have a clear record that will point out who provides higher grade products, for the best prices as well as identify those with bad loss records or poor delivery times. Turning our attention to affiliates, clients, and retailers, it’s possible to determine who sells the most of each product if there are payment issues, which one experiences the highest loss percentage, and more. This information is useful in minimizing expenses and boosting profits. Who wouldn’t take advantage of that? As well as this, the better understanding of your market will permit easier planning of your marketing. You can study your suppliers to reduce costs and watch your market so that you can maximize profit employing performance appraisal software. It renders employee performance management a breeze and far more effective in addition to helping you encourage staff by giving them unambiguous targets extremely. There may be no upper limit when leveraging performance management software!

Just like spring cleaning a house, the html code of your web pages should get periodic cleaning as well. Over time, as changes and updates are made to a web page, the code can become littered with unnecessary clutter, slowing down page load times and hurting the efficiency of your web page. Cluttered html can also seriously impact your search engine ranking.
This is especially true if you are using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web design package such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver. These programs will speed up your web site creation, but they are not that efficient at writing clean html code.
We will be focusing this discussion on the actual html coding, ignoring other programming languages that may be used in a page such as JavaScript. In the code examples I will be using ( and ) characters instead of correct html so that the code examples will display properly in this newsletter.
Up until recently when coding a page in HTML we would be using tags such as the (font) tag and (p) paragraph tags. Between these tags would be our page content, text, images and links. Each time a formatting change was made on the page new tags were needed with complete formatting for the new section. More recently we have gained the ability to use Cascading Style Sheets, allowing us to write the formatting once and then refer to that formatting several times within a web page.
In order to speed up page load times we need to have fewer characters on the page when viewed in an html editor. Since we really do not want to remove any of our visible content we need to look to the html code. By cleaning up this code we can remove characters, thereby creating a smaller web page that will load more quickly.
Over time HTML has changed and we now have many different ways to do the same thing. An example would be the code used to show a bold type face. In HTML we have two main choices, the (strong) tag and the (b) tag. As you can see the (strong) tag uses 5 more characters than the (b) tag, and if we consider the closing tags as well we see that using the (strong)(/strong) tag pair uses 10 more characters than the cleaner (b)(/b) tag pair.
This is our First Principle of clean HTML code: Use the simplest coding method available.
HTML has the ability of nesting code within other code. For instance we could have a line with three words where the middle word was in bold. This could be accomplished by changing the formatting completely each time the visible formatting changes. Consider this code: (font face=”times”)This(/font) (font face=”times”)(strong)BOLD(/strong)(/font) (font face=”times”)Word(/font) This takes up 90 characters.
This is very poorly written html and is what you occasionally will get when using a WYSIWYG editor. Since the (font) tags are repeating the same information we can simply nest the (strong) tags inside the (font) tags, and better yet use the (b) tag instead of the (strong) tag. This would give us this code (font face=”times)This (b)BOLD(/b) Word(/font), taking up only 46 characters.
This is our Second Principle of clean HTML code: Use nested tags when possible. Be aware that WYSIWYG editors will frequently update formatting by adding layer after layer of nested code. So while you are cleaning up the code look for redundant nested code placed there by your WYSIWYG editing program.
A big problem with using HTML tags is that we need to repeat the tag coding whenever we change the formatting. The advent of CSS allows us a great advantage in clean coding by allowing us to layout the formatting once in a document, then simply refer to it over and over again.
If we had six paragraphs in a page that switch between two different types of formatting, such as headings in Blue, Bold, Ariel, size 4 and paragraph text in Black, Times, size 2, using tags we would need to list that complete formatting each time we make a change.
(font face=”Ariel” color=”blue” size=”4″)(b)Our heading(/b)(/font) (font face=”Times color=”black” size=”2″)Our paragraph(/font) (font face=”Ariel” color=”blue” size=”4″)(b)Our next heading(/b)(/font) (font face=”Times color=”black” size=”2″)Our next paragraph(/font)
We would then repeat this for each heading and paragraph, lots of html code.
With CSS we could create CSS Styles for each formatting type, list the Styles once in the Header of the page, and then simply refer to the Style each time we make a change.
(head) (style type=”text/css”) (!– .style1 { font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; font-size: 24px; } .style2 { font-family: “Times New Roman”, Times, serif; font-size: 12px; } –) (/style) (/head) (body) (p class=”style1″)Heading(/p) (p class=”style2″)Paragraph Text(/p) (/body)
Notice that the Styles are created in the Head section of the page and then simply referenced in the Body section. As we add more formatting we would simply continue to refer to the previously created Styles.
This is our Third Principle of Clean HTML Code: Use CSS styles when ever possible. CSS has several other benefits, such as being able to place the CSS styles in an external file, thereby reducing the page size even more, and the ability to quickly update formatting site-wide by simply updating the external CSS Style file.
So with some simple cleaning of your HTML code you can easily reduce the file size and make a fast loading, lean and mean web page.
Barcode modules and extensions for Great Plains are a bit confusing and multiple options exist on the market. Barcoding is hardware as well as Great Plains Dexterity software development & customization oriented.
• Warehouse Management. Either Microsoft Dexterity or SQL Store procedures or even more complex - .Net web development is required
• SOP Module Extensions. Market has multiple out-of-the-box and ready-for-tailoring SCM solutions, developed in Dexterity, SQL Stored Procedures, VBA/Modifier and eConnect to fit end client supply chain management and inventory control needs
• Scanner and Hardware analysis. It is always good idea to preserve legacy company investment into barcode scanners and software. In some cases it is advisable to do hardware revision and upgrade, in our opinion - specialist help is the must
• eCommerce. eConnect software development is current trend for Microsoft Great Plains 9.0 (new Project Green name is Microsoft Dynamics and Great Plains is now Microsoft Dynamics GP as well as Microsoft Navision is Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Axapta is Microsoft Dynamics AX)
• Third Party Extensions. Fast Shipper from Alba Spectrum or scanner recommended coding are probably the options you should consider first
• eConnect Project. Microsoft Project Green or its newer name Microsoft Dynamics (GP) will recommend you to stick to eConnect VB or C# .Net development
• Microsoft Business Solutions tactic. It is recommended to check with Microsoft Business Solutions/Microsoft Dynamics/Project Green subdivision on the barcoding selection,
just in case - our time is very turbulent
• Microsoft Dynamics CRM integration. We know that MS Dynamics CRM is taking large companies CRM market and integration is very actual. Please, if you are on MS CRM 3.0, check out Scribe integration (might be expensive for smaller clients). Standard GP - MS CRM Integration is now in the development phase and actually competing with scribe, which might be purchased my MBS/Dynamics subdivision of MS

Want your images to have effects that’ll make it stand out more and show up well on every background tones? With Photoshop, you could achieve these effects for your images by its features that work on light and dark edges. These allow you to work on bringing out the best edges of your image - lighten or darken it, anyway you please to match on background tones and make it stand out more.
Through highlighting edges of your photo, you also highlight its details. The method of unsharp mask and others like the difference of Gaussians increase the change in brightness close to each step. This technique’s standard version adds a bright halo along the bright edge of the step and a dark halo along the dark edge. Depending on what effect you’d like for your image, there are advantages in just using one or the other. Using both may not do very much to improve your image, though.
There are several advantages of using any of the effects for the edges on real images. One is that it reduces interference between steps or detail and the haloes from other, nearby steps. Another thing, the light or dark haloes make other features of the image stand out better from the background.
Start doing this effect on your images using Photoshop by following several procedures:
1st step is duplicate the layer holding the image
2nd step - apply the conventional unsharp mask
3rd step - set the layer blending mode to “Darken” or “Lighten”.
However, you must understand that this only works for 8 bit per channel images - those that can be put into layers but it could function also on 16 bit per channel pictures with Optipix plug-in that allows direct selection of dark or light edges.
If you are not sure about which edge halo to use, there are general rules regarding such:
1. On light background tones, light edges don’t show up well and vice versa on dark ones.
2. The halo should lie on the background, not on the foreground. This technique helps the feature stand out without having to change its brightness values.
Sometimes the following rules are in conflict. It is necessary, then, to try several combinations to decide which is best. You can try both edges, light edges only, dark edges only. You can experiment since different regions of your image may call for different answers.
As you experiment for the best results, you’ll come to know that using unsharp mask filter may drive you to add too much additional local contrast. Understand that though adding some local contrast can make a bland image turn into a good one, adding too much creates a disaster. Take care not to add too much and make the image appear more like caricatures than photos. Remember that what looks best on the computer screen may not be the same in print since the process somewhat compresses contrast and blurs detail.

Should one use Windows Update?
This topic has good and valid arguments on both sides. Some would say keeping your windows up to date is essential in keeping it free of the newest, worst viruses and the like. Others would say that updating your windows is overemphasized, unneeded and a waste of time.
In the future, Microsoft will have ways of detecting whether your version of windows is actually store-bought, or pirated. With so many copies of pirated windows on the market, such a move by Microsoft is almost required in order to continue cornering the OS market. For instance, when SP 1 (and 2) came out, you had to have an authentic windows serial code in order to download the update. There are of course ways of getting around this, but it deterred much illegal upgrading to the new service packs. Had you have had a pirated copy of windows (and the majority does), then you could have downloaded a copy of windows SP 1/2, but you would have had to completely re-install and possibly format in order to install it.
If you had an original windows serial code that came with the product, you could have just downloaded the packs from the windows update servers.
So yes, having a non-pirated copy of windows is a convenience. However, some would remember a stunning virus that was released not too long ago; MyDoom. It managed to find its ways onto the Microsoft windows update servers. When you got the virus, you would have 30 seconds before the computer shut down. Should you have formatted, just to re-install windows with automatic updates turned on (and they are by default) you would get the virus again.
And not to mention Windows Updates are a large time factor. Some updates (especially the first time you use Windows Update) are colossal, and the download speeds are not always at their greatest. Someone on 56k would have a very hard time using windows update at all (and if you do, I recommend not bothering).
Now, you ask, what exactly is Windows Update? It’s simply Microsoft engineers working hard to fix bugs, problems and backdoors in Windows. What are these problems, you ask? Well, when Microsoft released windows it wasn’t exactly a perfect OS. With every version of Windows, it becomes more and more hi-tech. But there has always been problems with Windows being insecure.
The only way to find that Windows has a certain vulnerability is first for that vulnerability to be exploited. Eg, Microsoft using white hat hackers (the good guys) to breach windows, or for a hacker to break into a version of Windows and it is reported.
So, to answer the question, is it important to update your windows? It’s hard to say, without the answer being a biased opinion. I will give both sides of the argument merit, but it honestly depends on what you want to do with your PC. For large businesses with intranets, windows updates are likely a good idea. It only takes one serious OS fault for a hacker or a bad virus to leak in and infect the whole network. Windows faults and security issues, IE backdoors, etc. Windows update constantly has fixes for these problems.
For a home desktop, even for a home network, windows updates really aren’t that important. No one wants to hack the small guy; there is nothing to gain from it. Should you use a simple firewall, even the windows in-house firewall, you are protected from most threats. But big business is always at risk; major websites are constantly under the gun from DoS attacks and IE “tricks.” Windows Updates cannot really help DoS attacks, but they can prevent hackers, crackers, viruses and the like from entering their network computers from faults in the windows code.
So to answer the question - should I use windows update? If you’ve got a lot of infrastructure you want to protect, yes. If you’re a small guy, one PC at home, one laptop; even a few computers thrown together in your home network. The answer is no. I don’t recommend it, anyway. Just throw on your windows firewall, Black Ice Defender, Norton, Avast….what have you. And enjoy browsing. That’s about it.

It should be possible to convert spreadsheet graph data to SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). This could also be achieved in any software system that uses graphs. It is difficult to convert one structure to a different representation such as a tree based information structure of a component into a diagrammatic representation of a component in SVG. This is not impossible though as CAD tools can do this. But output of a graph to SVG is straight forward, as the actual structure and semantics are the same, its only the syntax that needs conversion, so this can be achieved using virtually any programming language. In spreadsheets the data is converted to a graph automatically anyway.
However it is not practical to expect users to do this, its much more sensible to provide this functionality for them, so they can concentrate on representing the graph to explain the information they want displayed. There might be graph types that are difficult to translate, but a good approach would be to first automate the translation to bar charts, line graphs, and pie charts.
If anyone has worked on this can they let me know, and I’ll add an explanation of what they are doing to this article.
It would also be interesting to know whether anyone is aware of whether Microsoft are going to provide an HTML output that conforms to W3C recommendations for XHTML so the converted pages can be validated. This is another straight forward problem, and would save everyone so much time. Another thing that would save a great deal of peoples’ time is a tool to aid in conversion of non-compliant web pages to compliant pages.
I am a Researcher in the final year of my. I specialise in applying Semantic Web techniques. My current research is on a technique of ‘User Driven Modelling/Programming’. My intention is to enable non-programmers to create software from a user interface that allows them to model a particular problem or scenario. This involves a user entering information visually in the from of a tree diagram. I am attempting to develop ways of automatically translating this information into program code in a variety of computer languages. This is very important and useful for many employees that have insufficient time to learn programming languages. I am using the Protege ontology editor developed from a project of Stanford University and beginning to use the Jena tool of Hewlett-Packard. I am looking to research visualisation, and visualisation techniques to create a human computer interface that allows non experts to create software.

Looks like Microsoft Great Plains becomes more and more popular, partly because of Microsoft muscles behind it. Now it is targeted to the whole spectrum of horizontal and vertical market clientele. Small companies use Small Business Manager (which is based on the same technology - Great Plains Dexterity dictionary and runtime), Great Plains Standard on MSDE is for small to midsize clients, and then Great Plains serves the rest of the market up to big corporations. There are several reporting tools available and you definitely need to know which one to use for different types of reports.
If you are developer who is asked: how do we create report for Microsoft Great Plains - read this and you will have the clues on where to look further.
- Great Plains Report Writer (ReportWriter) - this is built-in reporting tool. All the original report in Great Plains are written in ReportWriter. ReportWriter itself is Dexterity module. You should use this tool if you would like to modify existing Great Plains reports, such as Blank Invoice Form - here you can place your company logo, change the positioning, fonts, colors, etc. ReportWriter will allow you also do new reports - simple option if you want to export all the records from one Great Plains table - use it. New report, however doesn’t have interface where you would enter parameters - so it is not useful for real custom reports. Another limitation of ReportWriter - you can not do cross-modules report - when you need sales and purchasing info on the same report for example.
- FRx. This is excellent tool when deal with financial reporting - it works on the General Ledger level (Balance sheet, P&L, Cash Flow Statement, etc.). It also allows you to do multiple companies consolidation - when you do consolidated Balance Sheet (with inter-companies transactions elimination).
- Smart List - Export to Excel - this is nice feature in Great Plains - you could create a list with simple criteria and then export it to Excel.
- Crystal Reports. It gives you unlimited functionality. Obviously flexibility requires you to know Great Plains table structure: Launch Great Plains and go to Tools->Resource Description->Tables. Find the table in the proper series. If you are looking for the customers - it should be RM00101 - customer master file. If you need historical Sales Order Processing documents - they are in SOP30200 - Sales History Header file, etc. Create ODBC connection to GP Company database. Use the same technique as when you create standard ODBC connection for GP workstation - but change default database to targeted company database. Create SQL Query to probe the data - we always recommend tuning your query and see that you are getting adequate results - in any case - Crystal Report is just a nice tool to show the results of your query.
- Direct Web Publishing off Great Plains databases - yes - it is easy now with Visual Studio.Net and you can hire good programmers. This is good - Microsoft Business Solutions products: Great Plains, Solomon, Navision and Axapta will be integrated into so called Microsoft Business Portal - which will have web interface - you can get the idea if you look at Microsoft CRM web client - so direct web publishing is good taste.
- SQL Queries. If you have SQL background - this is great field for you. You know - with properly formatted SQL query you can realize simple EDI export/import for the integration with legacy systems.
