{April 09, 2008}   2005 AFC North Football Preview

In the AFC North I expect to see the Pittsburgh Steelers who posted a mark of 16-2 straight up and 11-7 ATS overall last season to win a close divisional battle over the Baltimore Ravens who finished up their 2004 campaign with a 9-7 straight up and ATS mark and over a much improved Cincinnati Bengal team that finished with an 8-8 straight up record for the second straight year in 2004, the Brownies once again look to pull up the rear in what should prove to be the toughest division in the NFL in 2005.

Pittsburgh has a tough row to hoe this season, the Steelers only have five games on the 2005 docket against 2004 playoff teams but four of those affairs take place on the road and that includes Monday Night road games at San Diego and at Indianapolis, overall the Steelers will play 10 of their 16 games against teams that posted .500 records or better last year, thus the reason for the projected drop off in regular season wins.

Like most teams Pittsburgh lost quite a bit of talent to free agency, most notably the Steelers lost a total of five linemen along their offensive and defensive fronts which could cause depth problems if the ole injury bug hits and those losses were in addition to star WR Plaxico Burress departing to the big apple to play catch with Eli Manning.

Baltimore has a very favorable schedule with regard to playing seven games against playoff teams from a year ago, however, five of those seven affairs will take place in Baltimore and two of those games are against dome teams (Vikes and Colts). The Ravens drafted WR Mark Clayton out of Oklahoma and overall had the best draft of any team in the AFC North, the free agent addition of WR Derrick Mason from the Titans along with the drafting of WR Clayton should bolster a stagnant Raven passing attack that was fully exposed last season.

The Bengals finished 2004 with an 8-8 straight up record for the second straight year under HC Marvin Lewis, Bengal faithful should be overjoyed with their seasonal finishes over the past couple of years when considering that these same Bengals posted a total of 8 wins combined during their 2001 and 2002 campaigns.

With QB Carson Palmer starting his second full season under center and weapons WR Chad Johnson and RB Rudi Johnson happy with new contracts, Cincinnati has all of the pieces on offense to make the playoffs in 2005, the Bengal’s major malfunction during their 2004 campaign was their run defense but the drafting of Georgia DE David Pollack who will play LB for the Bengals and Georgia LB Odell Thurman should correct that problem.

A new era starts in Cleveland Brownie land with the arrival of new HC Romeo Crennell who replaces ousted Butch Davis, the Brownies are actually an expansion team once again when considering that they have a totally new front office, totally new coaching staff and have replaced most of their offensive and defensive starters, the saving grace is that the new QB will be experienced retread Trent Dilfer who should be able to provide much needed leadership.

The Brownies added a lot of talent via the free agent market and actually had a pretty good draft which was highlighted with WR Braylon Edwards as their top choice, but in the big scheme of things there has been way too much turnover in this organization to expect much in 2005, look to play the Brownies whenever a home doggie of more than a FG after week four of the regular season, by this time the team should start to gel a little and the public won’t be ready for the opportunity.

In closing, the AFC North is a three horse race between Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Baltimore for the top spot, the difference maker will probably be who catches the ole injury bug and who avoids it, with that being said Pittsburgh gets the nod to win the division because of their depth at the QB and RB positions.

With regard to betting opportunities, Pittsburgh played 12 non divisional games in 2004 and went 6-6 ATS in those affairs, a closer look see reveals that the Steelers were a betting underdog in five of the six non divisional games they covered, meanwhile, the Steelers were favorites in five of the six non divisional games they failed to cover.

In other words as a dog playing a non divisional game the Steelers were virtually a sure bet to cover the spread, however, as a favorite in a non divisional game the Steelers had a tough time getting it up and hence proved to be almost a sure bet to NOT cover the posted number, a check backward in time reveals that these Steelers have failed to cover 6 of the past 7 times they have taken to the road as a favorite of six points or less against a non divisional opponent…things that make you go hmmmmm!!

{April 03, 2008}   Increasing the Value of Your Inflatable Combos

If you’re limiting your inflatable equipment party business to only on-site rentals, you may be missing out on a big piece of the market. Parents are always on the lookout for fun ways to entertain children at parties and events. Inflatable combos are great fun for parties, but not everyone has the space for a rental and many people prefer to host a party somewhere other their home or at a park where small children may wander off. Many parents prefer an indoor location that offers protection from extreme temperatures or the chance of rain.

Taking your inflatable party equipment business indoors means expanding your reach to new types of clients and enjoying a more stable business year round. Instead of being overbooked in the spring and summer months and sporadic during cold and rainy seasons, the controlled environment of an indoor facility promotes year round party bookings.

An indoor facility gives you the opportunity to expand your service offering well beyond the use of the inflatable equipment. By offering fun party food, drinks, piatas, costumes, and props for theme parties, your can greatly increase your earning potential while simplifying the lives of parents. With food, games, and safe entertainment provided from a single source, parents don’t need to worry about juggling a variety of different vendors.

When people have a problem to solve, they naturally turn to solutions that they are familiar before seeking out an unknown solution. With a location that is highly visible from a well traveled road, your inflatable party facility will become an automatic option for parents seeking a kid’s birthday party solution. Look for a facility with lots of large windows where passers by can see your colorful inflatable combos and how much fun children are having inside.

Word of mouth becomes exponential when parents bring their children to your facility to attend a friend’s birthday party. Parents don’t just become introduced to the general idea of hosting a party with inflatable combos, but rather to your brand of party fun and the unique attributes of your facility. An indoor facility allows you to create an entire ambiance of sights, smells, and sounds that is difficult for your competitors to rival.

Look for inflatables that allow for lots of movement and activity like inflatable obstacle courses, jumpers and slides. Unique designs constructed from multi-colored material will grab the attention of parents and kids alike. To withstand the increased use of the equipment, it’s important to choose well constructed inflatables with reinforced stitching, increased tongue tear and grab tensile capacity, and a solid warranty.

Indoor party facilities filled with inflatable combos, obstacle courses, slides and jumpers are cropping up in locations all across the US. The business model is a win-win situation for both customers and business owners. Children’s party solutions are always in demand by parents looking for ways to create a fun and memorable experience for their child’s special day. At the same time, owners of inflatable equipment can earn more revenue per party by offering a complete party package.

{April 02, 2008}   Super Bowl Preview

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Steelers in a Super Bowl (10 years). And we’ve never seen the Seahawks in the big game. Both teams have two weeks to prepare and come off relatively easy wins in the Championship games. This game is at a neutral site indoors (Detroit), but does anything stand out as far as how these teams fared on the road this season? The Steelers are playing their best football at the right time of the year, riding a 7-0 SU, 6-1 ATS run the last 7 games. Most impressive is that they were the No. 6 seed in the AFC and come off wins against the Bengals, Colts and Broncos - all on the road! That makes Pittsburgh 8-2 SU/ATS on the road this season! Seattle is only 5-3 SU, 4-4 ATS on the road, although they did average an impressive 27 ppg away from home. Edge to the Steelers.

Philosophically, both teams are similar. Coaches Bill Cowher and Mike Holmgren are veteran coaches who’ve taken their teams to the Super Bowl before. Holmgren makes his third trip, winning once and losing once with the Packers. Both coaches have built their teams with a philosophy around ball control and balanced offenses. Each team has a bruising running back and strong offensive line play.

It was interesting that the last few weeks both teams didn’t play conservative, which has been their reputation. Pittsburgh came out throwing the ball often against the Colts and Broncos, and threw several trick plays at the Bengals. In the past, Cowher has leaned more toward running the football, critics say too much, but that hasn’t been the case in this playoffs. Don’t be surprised if both teams come out throwing the ball and mixing up the plays. The difference this season for Pittsburgh is probably that Cowher has a talented young quarterback who is an excellent decision-maker. Cowher clearly has trust in letting Big Ben Roethlisberger throw the football. That wasn’t the case over the last ten years when he was stuck with below-average QBs such as Bubby Brister and Kordell Stewart.

Think back to last year’s Super Bowl when two fine QBs squared off in Donovan McNabb and Tom Brady. Brady was calm the whole game because he was playing in his third Super Bowl in four years. McNabb, on the other hand, was erratic, especially early on, overthrowing several receivers and tossing too many lollipop passes, one of which Rodney Harrison intercepted in the end zone in the first quarter. Nerves can get to QBs playing in their first Super Bowl with the whole world watching!

The fact that the game is indoors is probably a wash, favoring neither team. Experience is another factor to consider. Even though neither team has Super Bowl experience of late, I’d give an edge to the Steelers. Pittsburgh was 16-2 last season and hosted the AFC Championship game, losing to the Patriots. That experience factor has helped this postseason, especially since they played three games on the road in hostile environments in Cincinnati, Indy and Denver. And they played smart, mistake-free football. Seattlemade the playoffs last season, but flamed out in the first round against the Rams. Then, this year, they had an edge with home field, but played two playoff games against teams with several flaws in Washington (little offense) and Carolina (too many injuries, down to their third string back). Also, Seattle doesn’t have a lot of big-game experience away from home.

Looking back on this season, Seattle barely won on the road at St. Louis and Tennessee. And the Seahawks lost 23-17 at Green Bay (their last road game), 20-17 at Washington and 26-14 at Jacksonville to open the season. Also note that Seattle’s defense allowed 21 ppg on the road where they are 7-1 ‘Over’ the total. Pittsburgh has opened up the offense more in the second half of the season and carries a 5-2-1 run ‘Over’ the total into the Super Bowl. The Steelers also have more experience playing indoors: since Thanksgiving, they’ve played three games indoors, one at Minnesota and two at Indianapolis, going 2-1 SU/ATS.

Finally, games are often won and lost via turnovers and in the trenches. I can’t predict turnovers, but I can point out that in the trenches, both teams were outstanding at stopping the run this season, and each ranked in the Top 5 in the NFL. On paper, it’s a wash in the trenches, which possibly means turnovers will be the “la difference,” as the French say! Super Bowl 40 should be a fun one to dissect over the next two weeks and watch. Good luck as always…Al McMordie.
